5 Lies Every Twentysomething Needs to Stop Believing

Written by Paul Angone

Sarah had been told all her life she could do anything she wanted, that success was right around the corner. But now, stuck in a menial job at 25, with no big career in sight, she—like many twentysomethings—was feeling the pangs of disillusionment.

This sense of disillusionment often stems from the lies we’ve been told and have told ourselves. We’ve been lied to, and these lies are holding us back.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN YOUR STRUGGLE, QUESTIONS, WONDERING WHAT’S NEXT?, NOW WHAT?OR DO I HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

Too many twentysomethings are driving through the twists and turns of their twenties with windshields covered in mud, lies and half-truths. And then we wonder why so many of us have crashed?

We need to hose these lies off right now or spend our twenties stuck on the side of the road.

If we’re going to walk forward with the answers to the major questions we should be asking, successfully navigating our twenties, then we need to stop believing the following lies right now:

1. I’m the Only One Struggling

I would love to lock this lie away in a Serbian prison and give the key to a pack of Arctic wolves to defend. You are not alone in your struggle, questions, wondering what’s next?, now what? or do I have what it takes?

Our twenties are tough. That’s the truth. Too many twentysomethings are struggling through a quarter-life crisis all alone.

We all need help. We all need support. We all need nudges, prompts, advice and encouragement.

No one has it all figured out. The twentysomethings who think they do are in for the biggest shock of all.

Killing Lust Series: The Door

doorFor those of you who don’t know I am starting a series on how to kill lust. I hope this encourages or inspires you to start your journey to kill lust in your life.

If you have any kind of addiction the spirit of lust is operating in your life. In other words, any habit that you can’t exercise self-control over is powered by the spirit of lust. You may not be addicted to sex; it could be drugs, alcohol, food etc. Some people clearly want to stop this habit but they can’t. Whatever I share is not limited to only people struggling with sex. If any self-destructive habit is controlling you please, keep up with this series and let’s overcome it together.

Let’s begin..
Personally, I had some experiences from my childhood that opened the door to lust. I was too young to understand the consequences of what I was going through. Even though, I was too young to understand that something wasn’t right, I knew that something wasn’t right (hard to explain).

There has to be a doorway for lust to enter your life. Maybe you were molested when you were younger or you got exposed to something that caused lust to enter your life.  Sometimes, we invite lust into our lives by ignorance or it comes in by experience.

The enemy doesn’t care how lust enters your life. He wants lust to stay in your life to destroy you.

John 10:10 says “the thief comes to steal, to kill and to destroy”

My childhood experience opened the door to lust in my life.

Answer this question: what opened the door to lust in my life?

Tips to help you successfully deal with Academic Difficulty Part 2

1. Stay positive-This is so important.. Speak positively about the situation. Think positively about the situation and stay positive. You have to make a conscious effort to do this because it is not easy. Life is all about perspective, so give a positive spin to the situation.

2.  Counseling-I remember one of my classmates suggesting this to me. I went for two sessions and that was it. I have nothing against counseling; try it if it works for you use it. Personally, I didn’t stick to it because I made God my counselor. What does that mean? I would literally schedule time to spend time with God to get through this.

3. Speak life to the situation- I changed my vocabulary about the situation. Every time, I remember that I just failed. I would open my mouth and say “I am a success story.” Yes, you just failed. It doesn’t make any sense to use your words to beat yourself up. Use your words to speak life. You can say, “The lord will perfect that which concerns me” but make sure you speak life.

4. Exercise-Do whatever you do to help you with stress. If you like going out with friends to relax, do it. It has to be something you enjoy. For me, exercise helps me a lot with stress. I suggest, it should be something that will help you relieve stress.

5. Read– One of the books, I read which really helped me out was “the traveler’s Gift” by Andy Andrews. This book talks about a guy who is going through failure all around and he goes around meeting prominent people in history who give him some amazing advice about life. You don’t have to read this book but read a self-improvement book.

6. Take responsibility for what happened. Don’t say this teacher didn’t like me. You can’t move forward unto you take responsibility for what happened to you. Complete this sentence: I am here because I didn’t…  Complete this sentence honestly without beating yourself up.

7. You have to move forward. Moving forward could mean trying again and again. Whatever moving forward means to you do. For me, it meant trying again which I did but it didn’t work; however, I persevered. You might have to change your major etc but do not put your education on pause. Go forward.

8. This is not the time to talk to negative people. When you are at your lowest this is when your friends need to be your cheerleader. Cut out talking to negative people. If the negative person is your family member decrease the amount of time you talk to them. When you are very vulnerable at this time, you can’t afford to talk to people who will pull you down.

9. Look over your school journey what will you do differently next time? Implement the necessary changes you need now.

10. Never believe you are a failure.  Believe that the best is yet to come. People who are afraid to try already accepted failure. You didn’t, you gave it your all and that’s what will put you on the road to success. Successful people are not discouraged by failure, they are encouraged by it.

11. Create a journal and write down your thoughts. If you don’t like writing; at least, do videos on your laptop and store them on your computer. You don’t have to upload them on youtube (except you want do).

12. Write down new goals and go after them.

13. See yourself already where you want to be. This academic difficulty situation caused me to post pone my graduation. It was very important for me to see myself walking across that stage before it happened.

Day dream about where you want to be and see yourself there.  I had pictures of people with graduation gowns all over my dorm room. Your mind is the canvas you use to paint your future. Paint wisely! Remember as a man thinks in his heart so is he (Proverbs 23:7)

14. Watch this video:

No matter how many times you get knocked down, you have to get back up. Please, get back up and move forward!

My black is beautiful..

I grew up in Nigeria to see most women with relaxed hair.
Mind you, straight hair is not how God made us.
God created black people with kinky curly hair.
Most of us with relaxed hair have it cos our mothers, peers, friends had relaxed hair..

Racism has affected our race so much that we self-loath ourselves.
Even in the black community, our natural hair textures is frowned upon.
I believe God doesn’t make mistakes..
God made us with kinky curly hair textures for a reason..
We are not smarter than God. He would have given us a straighter hair textures if he wanted.

This makes me angry cos as black people, we have allowed the effects of slavery to linger.
During slavery..
white people told our ancestors that we are ugly with other gruesome stuff.
Yes, our ancestors bought into the lie and they got desperate to change themselves to something they are not..

We put harsh chemicals into our hair to make it straight.
Yes.. A lot of us relax our hair to make it more manageable.
Think about it, if our ancestors had kept their natural hair..
most of us would have been natural today.

I am very close to going completely natural..
I have a very coarse thick hair, if I go natural now.. I wouldn’t be able to comb my hair.
It’s that thick.

Trust me, the day I discover what I can use to soften my natural texture that will be the day I go natural.
Even now, my hair is not completely straight..
You’d think I would get support from my own people?
No!!
The society shouldn’t set the standard for us on our God-given nature.

We have to stop buying into this slavery, self-loathing mentality..
Our black is beautiful.
We are beautiful just the way God made us.
I support you all my natural sistas.
I will be joining you so..
We are beautiful with our kinky curly hair.

In the efforts to be something we are not..
a lot of black girls/ladies/women have damaged their hair.
We all have the ability to grow long beautiful hair but we can’t cos we are busy trying to change ourselves to please society.

Who cares about society?
Not me..
Our ancestors bought into the lies doesn’t mean we have to do the same.
It’s time, we stop pleasing others as a race for once and do the right thing best for our hair.

I think our hair is completely manageable..
we just have to find a healthier way without all these harsh chemicals..

The price of pleasing society is too expensive..
We are spending too much money on relaxers, wigs, weaves, etc
and all we have to do is come together figure out a way to have manageable hair with less short and long-term consequences.

We are not straight.. We are kinky curly.
